This series, called 'Pilgrims' is a long running series exploring tourism on a global scale. Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world. Decades ago, only the privileged could travel, but as it got cheaper, faster and easier, it is now available to almost anyone.
In my series I look for the defining elements of mass-tourism and show what toursist do, when they are being tourists. A recurring element of my photographs is picture-making, or as I call it: proof-making. The photo is the proof that the person was indeed there, in that particular country or at that particular attraction. In the age of smartphones, this has become almost an ingrained habit when travelling.
EarlierĀ 'tourist attractions' was seen on postcards, today people visiting the destinations they seen on Instagram. Tourists are the pilgrims of the modern era.
